North East Florida Applauded for Water Conservation

The eighth annual observation of Fix a Leak Week will be held March 14–20, and the city of Jacksonville is prepared. In recognizing the serious water waste and damage that leaks can cause in homes each year, it is estimated that more than 1 trillion gallons are lost each year in homes across the country due to indoor and outdoor leaks. That’s 10,000 gallons for each home- as much water as held in an average 21-foot swimming pool.  Florida is surrounded on three sides by water, and has thousands of lakes, and many streams and rivers.  In addition, Florida’s weather is changeable and unpredictable with long periods of wet weather which may be followed by long periods of dry weather. The greatest savings can be realized outdoors. More than half of residential water is used on lawns and landscapes. Year-round water restrictions are in place to ensure that water used for irrigation is used efficiently. New strategies and technologies are needed to meet future supply needs. Water conservation is the cornerstone of Florida’s sustainability.

Info leak:  a leaky faucet that drips at the rate of one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons per year. That’s the amount needed to take more than 180 showers!
